Comprehensive Physical Exams Q & A

Does my child need a comprehensive physical exam?

Dr. Nie specializes in pediatric physicals for babies, children, teenagers, and young adults. Newborns and toddlers should have checkups every few months. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children between ages 3-21 get annual physical exams, and Dr. Nie sees patients through age 23.

Along with routine physicals, your child might need an exam if they’re starting a new grade, going to a new school, or enroll in sports.

What happens at my child’s comprehensive physical exam?

Dr. Nie reviews your child’s medical history, checks their vital signs, and records measurements. Along with a head-to-toe physical exam, Dr. Nie uses advanced equipment for diagnostic tests, screenings, and treatments.

Hearing screening

The practice uses the Welch Allyn® 39400 OAE Hearing Screener to rapidly test your child’s hearing. With minimal cooperation needed, it’s a flexible diagnostic test for infants, newborns, toddlers, preschool, and school-age children.

Vision screening

The Welch Allyn Spot™ Vision Screener is a simple, accurate vision test for children of all ages. Dr. Nie uses the handheld device to quickly and easily detect vision issues, and it’s effective for children as young as six months old.

Fluoride treatment

All children are screened for dental health; We provide fluoride varnish to the primary teeth of all infants and children starting at the age of primary tooth eruption and continuing through age 5.

Fluoride varnish treatment effectively inhibits demineralization of teeth, resulting in highly significant dental caries reductions.

Why are physical exams important?

Taking your child for routine physical exams is the best way to identify potential health problems, prevent illness, and manage chronic conditions.

If your child needs blood drawn for a blood test, Nie Lina MD PC uses an AccuVein® vein finder. The vein finder eliminates the hassle and trauma of multiple needle sticks, particularly for children with difficult venous access.
